Seeds of a smile

By Chivalries as tiny,
A Blossom, or a Book,
The seeds of smiles are planted -
Which blossom in the dark.

by Emily Dickinson
(original punctuation)

According to Martha O'Keefe, who wrote "Into Deep Eternity," an introduction to Emily Dickinson, this poem was written about kind gifts or kind deeds which "plant" the seeds of a smile when "someone needs the memory of kindness."

  1. However did you get this book? Martha O'Keefe's daughter lives near me and her granddaughter was in a religious ed class with me briefly. Anyway, very lovely.
