However, after looking up the song online with piqued interest, I was astonished to see that the the artist was none other than Katy Perry, and the song was called "Unconditionally." You may be laughing at me if you already knew this, but if this song is unfamiliar to you too, I'd suggest listening to it. (I've included a video with just the lyrics, so you don't have to sit through the trippy oddness of her official music video.)

"Unconditionally" rather reminds me of Switchfoot's oldie but goodie, "Only Hope," in which you can effortlessly slide over from seeing it as a love song to a spiritual song, and back again. It does make for a fascinating listening experience.
Now, I'm not one who seeks room for religious interpretation in every single piece of art or writing out there; sometimes that's just not the focus of the individual's work, and it's not fair to them when we're missing what they're actually presenting.
What struck me, though, was how religious this song sounded, without trying to sound religious at all. Yes, this is clearly a romantic song, but, I'd still argue that this can be seen equally within a religious context.
Perry has had some, ah, curious ups and downs in her life, has made a lot of not-so-cool decisions, and has destroyed any hope of being a role model for young girls.
Maybe, though, she's still searching.
Once when I was very young I discussed with a friend the concept of praying for celebrities. I'd imagine that conversation took place because we were wishing that our favorite celebrities were better people in real life.
But it's occurred to me that perhaps that's what many of them need to stop being headlines, and start becoming people again.
